Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy propose new government efficiency initiative DOGE
A new initiative called the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is being proposed by Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy. This effort aims to streamline the federal government, similar to the National Performance Review (NPR) led by Al Gore in the 1990s. The NPR, also known as REGO, focused on improving government efficiency and reducing the workforce. It resulted in significant legislation and a reduction of 351,000 federal positions during Bill Clinton's presidency, contrasting with the current approach of DOGE, which emphasizes technology and political appointees. While REGO sought to enhance government functionality, DOGE appears to focus more on cutting government size. Experts suggest that collaboration with experienced civil servants could lead to more effective reforms, rather than solely reducing the workforce.
