Musk described Gaetz as a necessary figure to address corruption. Musk dismissed the allegations against Gaetz, stating they are "worth less than nothing" and emphasized the principle of innocence until proven guilty. He criticized former Attorney General Merrick Garland for not pursuing charges against Gaetz. Senators from both parties are seeking more information regarding a House ethics investigation into Gaetz, which includes claims he paid for sex with a 17-year-old. The Department of Justice previously decided not to file charges in February 2023.
