Emirati mothers granted extended child leave in UAE

Emirati mothers in the UAE can now take up to three years of leave to care for their children while still securing benefits for their future. This new opportunity comes under Federal Law No. (57) of 2023. To receive these benefits, mothers need to keep making monthly contributions. The General Pension and Social Security Authority (GPSSA) emphasizes its commitment to supporting Emirati women across various areas, including politics and the economy. The law offers special rights for female breadwinners, particularly in cases where their husband has passed away. For example, widows can combine their pension with that of their deceased spouse. According to the new law, the pension distribution has changed. A widow with children now gets a larger share, with 40% of the pension going to her and an equal share for each child. This aims to provide better financial support for mothers after the loss of their partner. Moreover, married, divorced, or widowed women with children face fewer barriers to receiving benefits. Their required contribution duration and age to access pensions are reduced after having multiple children. For instance, they can receive two fewer years of contributions for each of their fifth and sixth child. The laws also ensure that daughters and sons receive equal shares of their parent's pension. Unlike men, women can keep receiving pension benefits without being cut off when they marry. Overall, these changes aim to recognize and support the vital roles women play in both family and work settings.
