Emperor penguin named Gus recovers in Western Australia after 3400 km journey from Antarctica
An emperor penguin named Gus is recovering in Western Australia after traveling 3,400 kilometers from Antarctica. Found malnourished on a beach near Denmark, Gus is now under the care of wildlife carer Carol Biddulph. Biddulph reported that Gus was in poor condition when discovered, with visible bones. She has experience with penguins but noted that handling such a large bird was a unique challenge. Gus is being treated with fluids and is housed in a special enclosure with cooling misting jets. Scientists are puzzled by the penguin's long journey, as emperor penguins are typically found only in Antarctica.
