Ernakulam reports 22 malaria cases since January 2025
Ernakulam has reported 22 cases of malaria since January 1, 2025. Most of these cases are imported, meaning they were brought in by people traveling from other states where malaria is common. The highest number of cases occurred in January, with 14 reported that month. February saw six more cases, while two cases were reported between March 1 and 15. Areas affected include Vazhakulam, Manjalloor, and Kakkanad, among others. Health authorities in Ernakulam are urging local bodies to take action whenever a malaria case is confirmed. They want those who house migrant workers to report any cases to local authorities. Officials emphasize the need for ongoing control measures to stop imported cases from causing local outbreaks. Tomy Thannittamakal, a local leader, mentioned that health workers have been asked to monitor fever cases among migrant workers. This approach aims to catch any potential malaria cases quickly. Malaria is spread by the bite of infected Anopheles mosquitoes. These mosquitoes pass on harmful parasites into the bloodstream, which then affect red blood cells. M.J. Jomy, a health committee leader, stated that the situation is being managed well. He reassured the public that necessary steps are being taken to prevent any local outbreaks.
