Escudero: PUV modernization shouldn't be mandatory yet
Senate President Francis “Chiz” Escudero has expressed his concerns about the government's Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program (PUVMP). He believes the program should not be enforced on drivers until it is fully developed and improved. During a press conference, Escudero explained that the government needs to focus on fixing key issues, especially financing. He stated that many drivers may struggle to afford modernized jeepneys, despite their environmental benefits. Escudero emphasized that the financial aspects of the program should be a priority to ease the burdens on drivers and operators. The PUVMP aims to upgrade traditional jeepneys and other public utility vehicles to enhance safety and reduce environmental impact. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has assured the public that no drivers will lose their jobs due to the program. Meanwhile, Senator Grace Poe, a former chair of the Senate panel on public services, supports Escudero’s views. She argues that real modernization requires careful planning and consultation to ensure no drivers or passengers are overlooked. Poe also urged the Department of Transportation to address the challenges of the program effectively.
