ESU baseball team excels, led by Jack Rothenhausler
The East Stroudsburg University (ESU) baseball team is enjoying a strong season, with a record of 16-6. The team recently took a break after a challenging schedule that Coach John Kochmansky set up to improve their chance of success in the NCAA Division II tournament. This year, there are fewer spots available for at-large berths in the tournament. Senior captain Jack Rothenhausler, a graduate of Liberty High School, spoke about the unique experience this season has offered. Early games against tough opponents, like Southern New Hampshire, provided valuable challenges for the team. They finished strong by splitting four games against West Chester, a nationally ranked rival. Kochmansky, now in his 18th year as coach, celebrated his 500th career win when the team swept a doubleheader on February 28. One highlight was their 7-6 victory over Southern New Hampshire, a game that lasted 21 innings, making it one of the longest in Division II history. Rothenhausler is also making his mark on the team's history. He recently became the school’s career leader in doubles with 58 and is having a solid season, hitting .299 with 25 RBIs. Other local players, such as Dennis Pierce and Parker Frey, are also key contributors to the team's success. Injuries have affected some players, including Chaise Albus, who has been sidelined with a hamstring issue. Despite this, the team’s pitching has been exceptional, with a team ERA of 3.07, ranking them second in the nation. As the team prepares for more games in their conference, they are confident their tough non-conference schedule has helped them get ready for future challenges. Kochmansky believes that their current record puts them in a good position for the regional tournament ahead.
