Ethan Jessop trial ongoing for murder in Auckland

Ethan Jessop is currently on trial for the murder of 75-year-old Peter Rasmussen. The shooting took place at Rasmussen's home in Auckland in August 2021. Prosecutors claim that Lasalosi Vaitohi, a gang leader and co-defendant, planned the attack from prison. During the trial, Jessop’s ex-partner, Chauntel Laurent, provided awkward testimony. She showed little serious recall of events, repeatedly stating that her memory was impaired by drugs and time. Despite the serious nature of the trial, she giggled and responded positively when shown a photo of Jessop, saying “Yum.” Jessop has admitted to shooting Rasmussen but his lawyers argue that the act was unintended. He is being tried alongside fellow gang members Vaitohi and Daziea Huia. The trial continues as the court looks for clarity on what led to the tragic incident.
