EU boosts Ukraine's defenses, defying Putin's demands
The European Union is advancing its "steel porcupine strategy" to enhance Ukraine's defenses against Russia, ignoring demands from Russian President Vladimir Putin to halt Western support. The EU aims to strengthen Ukraine’s defense industry and military capabilities. This plan is intended to prevent future Russian invasions. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz emphasized the importance of ongoing support from the EU, its allies, and individual countries at a recent summit. The strategy includes boosting Ukraine's air defense systems with interceptor missiles and drones. It also plans to supply Ukraine with at least 2 million rounds of artillery shells annually. Additionally, European military officers will assist in training many Ukrainian soldiers. Ukrainians may also become part of the EU's space program, gaining access to services related to navigation and communication. Most EU leaders support the military framework discussed on Wednesday, except for Hungary’s Prime Minister, who has maintained a friendly relationship with Putin. The EU's "Readiness 2030" strategy aims to reduce reliance on US military equipment and encourage purchase from European suppliers. The EU has introduced a new $162 billion defense fund for member nations and Ukraine to borrow from for military needs. This renewed support follows Putin's recent call to former President Trump, urging a halt to military aid to Ukraine. Trump claimed that no discussion about aid took place during their conversation.
