EU citizen support hits record high amid security concerns
Support for the European Union (EU) among its citizens has reached a record high, according to a new Eurobarometer poll. The survey, conducted between January and February, shows that 74% of people believe their country benefits from EU membership. This is the highest level of support since the question was first asked in 1983. Citizens cite the EU's role in protecting peace and enhancing security as the main reason for their support. This priority has risen in importance, now cited by 35% of respondents, while the focus on improved cooperation between EU countries has dropped to 34%. Concerns about security have grown due to the ongoing war in Ukraine. Many fear potential aggression from Russia and uncertainty regarding U.S. protection through NATO. In response, the EU is increasing joint defense spending and developing its defense industry to deter possible threats. Despite the high support for the EU, economic worries remain significant. One third of respondents expect their living standards to decrease in the next five years. Many citizens also want EU institutions to focus on rising living costs, as well as concerns over the EU's industrial competitiveness. Overall, two-thirds of citizens believe the EU should play a larger role in protecting them from global crises and security risks. Half of the respondents acknowledge that this protective role has grown in recent years.
