EU climate monitor predicts 2024 will be hottest year on record
The Copernicus Climate Change Service reports that 2024 is set to become the hottest year on record, surpassing 2023. This year will also be the first to exceed the critical 1.5 degrees Celsius threshold compared to pre-industrial times. The agency noted that unprecedented heat from January to November has driven global temperatures to new highs. November 2024 was the second-warmest on record, with Portugal experiencing its hottest November ever. Despite international efforts to limit warming, carbon dioxide emissions continue to rise. The UN warns that current climate actions could lead to a catastrophic 3.1 degrees Celsius increase.
