EU directs TikTok to freeze data linked to Romanian elections

The European Union has ordered TikTok to freeze data related to the Romanian elections. This action follows concerns about foreign interference, particularly after pro-Russia candidate Calin Georgescu's strong performance in the presidential election's first round. Documents revealed that Georgescu was heavily promoted on TikTok through coordinated accounts and paid promotions, despite declaring no campaign funds. The EU's order is part of its Digital Services Act, which regulates social media operations in Europe. The U.S. has also expressed worries about potential foreign influence in Romania's elections. Russia has denied any involvement in the election campaigns.
