EU implements new regulations to limit artificial intelligence use
New EU regulations on artificial intelligence took effect on Sunday with the implementation of the EU AI Act. The act prohibits AI systems that exploit human vulnerabilities, such as subliminal techniques and social scoring, which are used in China. Emotion recognition in workplaces and schools is banned, except for specific medical or safety reasons. Biometric categorization in public spaces is also prohibited, while law enforcement can use facial recognition for serious crimes like human trafficking. Starting now, companies must assess their AI systems for risk and comply with legal requirements. The act aims to protect consumers and ensure responsible AI use, requiring adequate competence from those involved in AI development and operation.
