EU renewable energy reached 47.4% electricity in 2024
In 2024, renewable energy sources generated 47.4% of net electricity in the European Union. This is an increase of 2.6 percentage points from the previous year. Denmark led the EU with the highest share of renewables, at 88.8%. The majority of this energy came from wind power. Portugal followed closely with 87.4% from wind and hydro sources. Croatia also had a significant share at 73.8%, mostly from hydro power. On the other hand, some countries had much lower percentages of renewable energy. Malta recorded the lowest at 15.1%, followed by Czechia at 17.5% and Cyprus at 24.1%. Wind and hydro power combined made up more than two-thirds of the renewable electricity generated. Wind contributed 39.1%, while hydro provided 29.9%. Solar energy accounted for 22.4%, along with 8.1% from combustible fuels and just around 0.5% from geothermal sources.
