Europe investigates Huawei bribery scandal involving lawmakers
European authorities are investigating a possible bribery scheme involving Huawei, the Chinese telecommunications company. As many as 15 current and former members of the European Parliament (MEPs) are suspected of taking bribes. The investigation, started by Belgian intelligence, aims to address foreign influence on European politics. On March 13, police conducted raids at 21 locations across Belgium, France, and Portugal. They included offices linked to Huawei lobbyists in Brussels. Several individuals were detained, and one arrest was reported in France. Some parliamentary offices were sealed for further investigation, particularly those suspected of receiving illegal wire transfers. Following these events, the European Parliament has banned Huawei lobbyists from its premises. Investigators are looking into allegations of corruption, forgery, criminal organization, and money laundering. It is believed that gifts, including food and travel, were exchanged for political favors as early as 2021. The gifts reportedly exceeded the 150 euros limit that requires reporting. Huawei is believed to have connections with China's military and intelligence agencies. The company operates in 170 countries and has the potential to conduct espionage. While it faces a ban in the U.S., it continues to have a strong presence in Europe, similar to its standing in 2022. With a market value of $178 billion, Huawei actively engages with European political figures, including former European Council President Charles Michel. The company aims to play a significant role in Europe's artificial intelligence and cloud computing industries. Some express concerns about balancing economic benefits with national security. In November, Huawei held an event in Paris attended by various European officials. At a recent gathering in Davos, Huawei's CEO emphasized the company's commitment to contributing to Europe's digital landscape. As relations between Europe and China evolve, more scrutiny of potential foreign influence is expected. In recent months, Huawei has also partnered with local authorities in Barcelona to promote technology training and innovation. This partnership underscores the company's strategy to increase its influence at all levels of European governance. The recent raids indicate efforts to combat such influences, but many believe more action is necessary.
