Europe seeks defense autonomy from U.S. leadership
President Trump has indicated that Europe can no longer rely on the U.S. for security, urging European nations to enhance their own defense capabilities. This marks a shift from previous U.S. support, particularly regarding NATO spending. In response, several European countries have announced plans to increase their defense budgets. The U.K. aims to raise its spending from 2.3% to 2.5% of GDP by 2027, while France is considering a boost to 3%-3.5%. European leaders are forming a coalition to support Ukraine independently of the U.S. This realignment may lead to greater European autonomy in defense matters, potentially reducing U.S. influence in the region.
