European mission to study Sun's corona launches from India
A European mission to study the Sun's corona launched successfully from India on December 5, 2024. The Proba-3 mission uses two satellites that will fly in precise formation to mimic a solar eclipse, allowing for extended observations of the Sun's outer atmosphere. The satellites will separate early next year and operate 150 meters apart, with one blocking sunlight to enable the other to observe the corona. This setup aims to provide 10 to 12 hours of data weekly over two years, significantly more than the brief observations possible during total solar eclipses. The mission follows challenges faced by the European Space Agency after losing access to Russian rockets. The Proba-3 launch was delayed by a day due to a technical issue but marks a significant achievement for both the ESA and the Indian Space Research Organisation.
