Europe's rearmament may reduce support for Asian security
Europe is shifting focus to its own security needs amid a major rearmament initiative, raising concerns about its commitment to Asian security. The EU plans to mobilize around €800 billion for defense over the next four years. Previously, European states had adopted "Indo-Pacific Strategies" to support regional security, signing defense agreements with countries like Vietnam and the Philippines. However, experts suggest that European resources may be stretched thin, impacting support for Asia. Despite potential cuts to foreign aid, trade relations with the Indo-Pacific are expected to remain stable. The EU is pursuing free trade agreements with Thailand and Malaysia, while Germany will take over a key environmental partnership role in Indonesia.
