Eutelsat ordered to halt broadcasting Russian channels

French media regulator Arcom has ordered Eutelsat to stop broadcasting two Russian channels, STS and Channel 5. This decision comes after an investigation found that Eutelsat's agreements were linked to a company under European sanctions. The notice to cease broadcasting follows requests from several non-governmental organizations. Arcom stated that these channels are controlled by JSC National Media Group, which has had its financial resources frozen due to sanctions. This means the channels cannot be distributed. Eutelsat confirmed it would comply with Arcom's directive and implement the request as soon as possible, though it noted that National Media Group was not its direct customer. The channels are currently broadcast through Eutelsat’s capacity on the Eutelsat 36C satellite. Arcom has given Eutelsat three days to stop the broadcasts, after which it may impose fines. During the investigation, Arcom also alerted internet providers about irregular content, which was removed. Arcom continues to investigate other channels believed to be in violation of sanctions. Eutelsat stated that, at this time, no other channels have been targeted by Arcom. The French NGO Comité Diderot welcomed the decision but argued that more channels should be banned, particularly those linked to the Russian military and the Orthodox Church. Eutelsat previously stopped broadcasting three Russian channels in 2022 after a similar directive from Arcom.
