Exiled England rugby star Jack Willis considered for Lions
Former England rugby coach Sir Clive Woodward has called for Jack Willis to be included in the British and Irish Lions squad for the upcoming tour in Australia. This suggestion comes despite Willis not playing a single minute in the recent Six Nations tournament. Willis is currently playing for the French club Toulouse, which has made him ineligible for international selection under a rule set by the Rugby Football Union (RFU) in 2011. This rule prevents England from picking players who are based overseas to protect the quality of domestic leagues. England finished as runners-up to France in this year's Six Nations. Woodward criticized the RFU's rule, describing it as “ridiculous.” He noted that Willis has shown exceptional form in France and believes he should be part of the team, even if he has to miss the beginning of the tour. He argued that the best available players must be selected, regardless of their club commitments. England coach Steve Borthwick acknowledges the challenges of selecting the squad. He expressed disappointment for Ollie Lawrence, who will miss the tour due to an Achilles injury. Borthwick noted that picking the team has been complicated, as it changes based on player performances. He hopes for stability in the squad and wants to avoid further injuries.
