Expedition 33 merges JRPGs, Sekiro, and deckbuilding styles
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a new video game that builds on the classic style of Japanese role-playing games (JRPGs). It draws inspiration from famous titles like Final Fantasy 7, 8, 9, and 10. However, it also incorporates elements from the game Sekiro and features mechanics from deckbuilding games. The game's producer, François Meurisse, shared that the goal was to capture the essence of classic turn-based RPGs while adding modern gameplay elements. He mentioned that their game director, Guillaume Broche, grew up playing these Final Fantasy titles and wanted to recreate their feelings in a contemporary setting. Players can expect a unique combat system that mixes traditional turn-based battles with action-based elements. This blend makes the game challenging, similar to fights in From Software games, known for their demanding boss battles. The game also features an innovative system where special attacks can combine to enhance their effectiveness. Meurisse emphasized that the game's art style differs from typical anime or manga graphics. Instead, the developers chose a look inspired by the early 20th-century Belle Époque period, infused with art deco and fantasy elements. This creative direction aims to give Expedition 33 its unique identity in the gaming landscape. With these inspirations, Expedition 33 hopes to carve out a special place among the best JRPGs.
