Experts warn of rising abuse through smart home technology in domestic violence cases
Domestic abusers are increasingly using smart home technology to control and monitor their victims, according to Jodi Leedham from the charity Refuge. Devices like smart locks, speakers, and cameras can be manipulated to create fear and exert control. Leedham noted a significant rise in tech-related abuse cases, with referrals to their specialist team increasing by 207% since its launch. Many survivors report their abusers using technology to track movements and invade privacy, often post-separation. The charity is also raising funds to build safe houses for women and children escaping abuse. Leedham emphasized the need for awareness about how everyday technology can be weaponized in domestic abuse situations.
