Extinct fish species reintroduced to Australian waters with successful release of 200 individuals
The olive perchlet, a fish declared extinct in the 1980s, has been reintroduced to the wild in Australia. In January, 200 fish were released into Cameron's Creek in Gunbower National Park, marking the first reintroduction since its extinction. The olive perchlet was last seen in 1929 and plays a vital role in the ecosystem. It helps maintain food systems and serves as a food source for birds. The fish were bred in captivity with assistance from the Victorian Fisheries Authority. A previous release of 100 olive perchlet in October showed promising results, with 855 individuals thriving in a different location. The species had gone extinct due to predation, habitat loss, and water level changes.
