Extortion calls to businessmen spark police investigations in Delhi

timesofindia.indiatimes.com

In east Delhi, several businessmen have reported receiving extortion calls from gangsters, causing alarm among police. This situation follows a recent wave of extortion activities in Dwarka, where multiple arrests were made. However, there have been no significant developments in the ongoing cases. One businessman was contacted by the Jaipal Bhullar group, which demanded "protection money" of Rs 1 crore. The caller also threatened to harm him and his family if he did not comply. This businessman rushed to the nearest police station to report the incident. Authorities believe there may be more victims who are too afraid to step forward. The Jaipal Bhullar group has recently expanded its activities into Delhi, having previously operated mainly in Punjab. Jaipal and an associate were killed by police in 2021, and since then, other gangsters have taken over. Another businessman, targeted by a Dubai-based gangster named Rashid Cablewala, received calls demanding Rs 3-4 crore. The callers threatened to shoot him if the money was not paid. Police have opened an investigation into these incidents. Special CP Ravindra Yadav has involved the counter-intelligence unit in the inquiry, following a surge of extortion claims. Officers are also looking into allegations that an inspector from the unit improperly offered to resolve the matters, and they are verifying reports of some officers attending a party with the complainant. Recently, the counter-intelligence unit has been active in Shahdara and neighboring areas due to ongoing investigations. Earlier this month, concerns were raised over a suspect's illegal detention related to the murder of businessman Sunil Jain.
