FAI urges government to fund League of Ireland academies
The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) is urging the Irish Government to fulfill its promise of funding for League of Ireland academies. FAI CEO David Courell made this request as Ireland prepares to play Bulgaria in a Nations League playoff. In his program notes, Courell emphasized the importance of these academies. The topic was a key point in the Programme for Government, especially during the general election campaign last November. Fianna Fail highlighted the need for investment in football academies after discussions showed Ireland lags behind other European countries. The Programme included a commitment to explore new ways to create football academies with the FAI and League of Ireland. However, the recent sports minister’s remarks suggested that funding for academies may not be a top priority. Courell called for the government to follow through on its pledge. He stated that investment in facilities and coaching is crucial for the future of football in Ireland. He expressed hope for constructive talks with the government to support grassroots football and the League of Ireland. He concluded by saying that the League of Ireland is currently thriving, but ongoing support is essential to nurture future international players.
