Family receives death certificate of murdered trainee doctor
The family of a trainee doctor, who was raped and killed at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in August 2024, has finally received her death certificate. This event took place on Wednesday when West Bengal's health secretary, Narayan Swaroop Nigam, personally handed it to the grieving parents. The family had been struggling for months to obtain the certificate. They expressed frustration at the delays, implying that they had to visit multiple offices without success. The father of the doctor shared their struggles with reporters, highlighting how difficult it had been to navigate the bureaucracy. The 31-year-old doctor was a victim of a violent crime committed by a civic volunteer of the Kolkata Police. In January 2025, a local court sentenced the man, Sanjay Roy, to life in prison for his actions. Following her death, the family criticized the authorities for their lack of response regarding the death certificate. When asked about the reasons for the delay in issuing the death certificate, the health secretary chose not to comment. The family had previously sought an investigation into the case from the Supreme Court but were advised to approach the Calcutta High Court instead.
