Farakka Barrage to be commissioned soon in India
The Union Government in India plans to commission the Farakka Barrage soon. This decision comes despite earlier concerns raised by a Bangladeshi delegation during talks in February. Officials from the Union Irrigation Ministry believe there will be no major issues in moving forward. They are hopeful that Bangladesh will not block the project. The construction of the Farakka Barrage took nearly 12 years and cost over INR 130 crores. Previous discussions have aimed to reassure the Bangladeshi government that the barrage will not negatively affect their water resources. The recent talks on the Ganga waters did not result in a complete agreement, but the Indian government is confident about the barrage's future.
