Farm Guard device successfully deters elephants in Kerala
The Aralam Farming Corporation in Kerala is testing a new device called Farm Guard to keep elephants away from farmlands. This device emits loud sounds and flashing lights to deter wildlife, and has shown promising results in its first ten days of use. Since Farm Guard was installed, there have been no elephant intrusions in an area that previously experienced 36 incidents. The device uses motion sensors and can detect animals within a 14 to 28-meter range, depending on conditions. Developed by two engineering graduates, the device is powered by a rechargeable battery and can last up to 30 days. It has been tested successfully in other locations and a dedicated version for detecting elephants will be launched soon.
