Farmer in Misamis Oriental transitions to fishpond ownership
Eric A. Janolino has been a farmer for over 30 years in the remote community of Tingkulan, Barangay Bagocboc. He primarily grew rice, corn, and vegetables to support his family. Despite his dedication, he faced many challenges, including high-interest loans from informal lenders that left him struggling to make a profit. In 2023, everything changed for Eric when he discovered financial help for small farmers from LANDBANK and the Department of Agriculture. Through the Agricultural Competitiveness Enhancement Fund, he received a loan of ₱100,000 with a low-interest rate of 2%. This support allowed him to start tilapia farming and build three fishponds, with guidance from agricultural experts. The results have been life-changing. Eric's income increased significantly, allowing him to invest in transportation and even renovate his home. Most importantly, he can now send his children to school. Inspired by his success, Eric encouraged other farmers in his area to also access the low-cost loans, and many followed his lead. The ACEF Lending Program aims to support small farmers and fishers across the country by providing accessible credit and resources. To date, LANDBANK has issued ₱14 billion in loans, helping over 95,000 borrowers, mostly small-scale agricultural workers.
