Farmers in Greater Noida demand increased land compensation
Farmers in Greater Noida held a protest on Wednesday, demanding higher compensation for their land used in development projects. The protest began around 10 a.m. and lasted for four hours. The farmers, part of the Sanyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), gathered at Zero Point. They expressed frustration that their concerns have not been addressed. Sunil Pradhan, a spokesperson for the farmers, said, "We feel cheated" about the lack of action on their demands. Traffic police had prepared for congestion but reported that the protest did not disrupt traffic on the expressways. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Lakhan Singh Yadav said the protesters demonstrated in a way that kept traffic flowing smoothly. Following the protest, officials, including Yamuna authority CEO Arun Veer Singh and district magistrate Manish Kumar Verma, met with the farmers to discuss their issues. They have been called back for further discussions on Thursday. In December 2024, the Uttar Pradesh government directed three development authorities to list farmers eligible for increased compensation and ensure timely payments. This order came after another protest where thousands of farmers aimed to march to the national capital, resulting in significant traffic delays.
