Farmers in Tamil Nadu threaten protests over compensation
Farmers in the Budalur block of Thanjavur district are threatening to protest if their demands for compensation for crop losses are not met before the next paddy cultivation season. The Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Sangam, which is linked to the Communist Party of India (Marxist), made this announcement during a recent farmers' grievance meeting. N.V. Kannan, the district secretary of the farmers' union, expressed concerns about the tough conditions farmers are facing. He said their requests for proper maintenance of irrigation channels have been ignored. Adding to their difficulties, many farmers have not received compensation for their crop losses, even after official assessments were conducted. These farmers have also been waiting for crop insurance payments. Kannan criticized the government for making promises to improve farmers' conditions that have not been fulfilled. He urged local officials to assist the farmers before the next planting season begins.
