Father and son arrested for Fort Lauderdale hit-and-run
A father and son from Plantation have been arrested for a hit-and-run crash in Fort Lauderdale that killed a bicyclist. Pedro David Vasallo, 64, and his son, Pedro David Vasallo II, 24, face charges related to the incident from December 14. The crash claimed the life of 58-year-old Kenneth Solovay. Police arrested the Vasallos on Tuesday based on arrest warrants. Vasallo II is charged with leaving the scene after causing a death, while his father is charged as an accessory. According to police, Solovay was biking near Davie Boulevard when he was struck by a silver 2019 Mercedes-Benz. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital. Surveillance footage showed Vasallo II leaving work at a nightclub in a similar vehicle shortly before the accident. The investigation found a broken piece of the car's bumper at the crash site. This, along with the surveillance videos, helped identify the vehicle registered to relatives of Vasallo II. Detectives visited the registered address, where they found the same Mercedes parked in the backyard, with damage matching the crash. Additional camera footage showed Vasallo II arriving home shortly after the incident. A relative mentioned that “Gordy,” a nickname for Vasallo II, hit someone on a bicycle. Both men are still in jail while the investigation continues.
