Father and son both overcame heart defects together
Chris Kidwell, who had two heart surgeries as a child, found strength in Brazilian jiu-jitsu after overcoming his health challenges. Recently, he faced a new concern when his 9-year-old son, Carter, was diagnosed with a similar heart defect. When Chris was born in 1987, doctors discovered that his aorta and pulmonary artery were switched, which is a serious condition. At just six days old, he underwent surgery to correct this issue. The surgery was successful, but Chris had to avoid contact sports throughout his childhood. Growing up in Indiana, Chris loved martial arts. He eventually found Brazilian jiu-jitsu, a sport that suited his condition since it does not involve hitting to the chest. Chris trained hard, often surpassing opponents much larger than himself. He later earned a doctorate in education and inspired local kids by teaching them jiu-jitsu. Two years ago, during a routine checkup, doctors found that Carter had an atrial septal defect, a hole in his heart. This diagnosis brought back memories for Chris, who comforted Carter before his surgery with a favorite song. Carter successfully underwent surgery at the same hospital that treated Chris. He is now doing well and has no physical limitations. The family enjoys spending time outdoors together, including kayaking on local rivers. Chris feels grateful for his health and encourages other parents in similar situations to trust their doctors and stay hopeful.
