Father highlights fulfilling lives of kids with Down syndrome
On March 21, which is World Down Syndrome Day, conversations about Down syndrome took place in Times Square. Fox News contributor Tom Shillue interviewed Daniel Schreck, a father whose daughter has Down syndrome. Schreck is also the chairman of the Jérôme Lejeune Foundation, which supports those with genetic intellectual disabilities. Schreck emphasized that people with Down syndrome can lead very fulfilling lives. He mentioned common fears about the condition, stating that there is nothing to be afraid of. “People with Down syndrome are the happiest people you've ever met,” he said, highlighting their positive nature. World Down Syndrome Day aims to raise awareness and understanding about the condition. The date, March 21, was selected to reflect the triplication of the 21st chromosome, which causes Down syndrome. Schreck joked that having an extra chromosome might even contribute to happiness. Schreck's son, Danny, also joined the discussion about his sister, Rose. He remarked on her joyful spirit, saying, “It's kind of weird to see everyone else compared to her, where she's just so happy.” Down syndrome is the most common chromosomal condition, affecting about 5,000 babies born each year in the U.S.
