FBI warns free tools may steal personal data
The FBI has issued a warning about "free" online tools that can harm your computer and steal personal information. Many people try to find free file converter tools to open documents without paying for expensive software. However, these tools may actually contain malware that compromises your security. The malware can allow cyber criminals to access your computer and gather sensitive information from your submitted files. This could lead to severe financial consequences, including ransomware attacks where your computer is held hostage until you pay a ransom. FBI officials stress the importance of educating the public to prevent these scams. Special Agent Mark Michalek highlighted the need for people to stay informed and report any incidents. The FBI is actively working to identify and hold accountable those responsible for these crimes. While the FBI did not name specific websites involved in this scheme, they indicated that these sites often appear legitimate. They mislead users with promises of converting files, such as changing .doc to .pdf, or merging images and audio files. Once users download the "free" software, the malware installs itself without their knowledge. If you suspect you have fallen victim to this scam, the FBI recommends that you take immediate action to protect your assets and report the incident.
