FCC approves SpaceX and T-Mobile to provide satellite service for hurricane-affected areas
The FCC has authorized SpaceX and T-Mobile to provide direct-to-cell service using Starlink satellites in areas affected by Hurricane Helene. This service will allow emergency alerts to be sent to all mobile networks in North Carolina. SpaceX announced that the Starlink satellites have begun broadcasting these emergency alerts. The companies are also considering a trial for basic texting capabilities for T-Mobile users in the state. This approval follows challenges in delivering Starlink terminals to disaster areas. The situation improved after Transport Secretary Pete Buttigieg expedited approval for support flights, enabling better communication services in the hurricane-hit regions.
