FedEx has decided to delay the retirement of its MD-11 aircraft fleet until 2032. Originally, the company planned to retire these planes in 2028. This decision comes as FedEx also placed an order for eight additional Boeing 777 freighters. The company expects to receive its first three Boeing 777 freighters by 2026. The rest of the order is set to be delivered by the end of 2027. Currently, FedEx operates 58 Boeing 777-200 freighters, averaging about nine years in age. The company states that these newer aircraft are more fuel-efficient, helping to reduce costs and replace older models. In addition to the 777 freighters, FedEx has ordered ten ATR 72-600 turboprop freighters. These new planes are part of a previous commitment made for 30 aircraft. Deliveries for the ATR models are planned between 2027 and 2029. The ATR 72-600F is designed specifically for cargo and can carry standard Unit Load Devices. It features advanced technology and a larger cargo door, making it a valuable addition to FedEx's fleet for smaller markets. In total, this aircraft should enhance operations and allow FedEx to optimize its network capabilities.
