Filipino-Chinese business leaders affirm strong PH-China ties
The Philippines will celebrate Filipino-Chinese Friendship Day on June 29. This event recognizes the long-standing friendly relations between the Philippines and China. The tradition started in 2002 and highlights the importance of people-to-people connections. Philippine leaders and scholars have shared their thoughts on the relationship between the two nations. Former senator Nikki Coseteng emphasized the need for communication to resolve conflicts. Dr. Rommel Banlaoi, a political scientist, noted that historical ties in the West Philippine Sea connect rather than separate the two countries. Business leader John Y. Gaisano stated that Chinese and Filipinos work well together by focusing on common interests. Dela Salle University Professor Meah Ang See expressed optimism about the future of Filipino-Chinese relations. Dr. Cecilio Pedro, head of the Federation of Filipino-Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry, mentioned that the federation helps build friendship through community initiatives. He highlighted their people-to-people approach, which includes free seminars for small businesses. Dr. Banlaoi pointed out that historical biases have shaped some negative views towards Chinese individuals in the Philippines. He believes understanding the past is crucial to improving relations moving forward.
