Filipino women pursue maritime leadership roles in Cavite
Filipino women are increasingly pursuing leadership roles in the maritime industry, with nearly ten times more female aspirants at the MOL Magsaysay Maritime Academy since its opening in 2021. The number of women graduates has risen to 11, with two recent graduates securing positions as third officer and engineer. The academy has seen a significant increase in female enrollment, reflecting a growing interest in maritime careers beyond traditional roles. Companies like Mitsui O.S.K. Lines and Magsaysay Maritime Corp. are actively seeking more female cadets, indicating a shift towards gender neutrality in the industry. Despite women making up less than 2 percent of the global maritime workforce, initiatives at MMMA aim to support female cadets through mentorship and leadership programs. The school continues to promote seafaring careers among young women to address the gender imbalance in the field.
