Firefighters control large outdoor fire in Burke County
Firefighters in Burke County are working to control a large fire that broke out on Old Amherst Road. The incident began around 11:30 a.m. on Saturday. The fire has led to the closure of Old Amherst Road between Smokey Creek Road and Dogwood Vista. Five buildings have been affected by the flames, but so far, there have been no reported injuries. To assist in battling the fire, two helicopters from the North Carolina Forest Service and a Scout Plane were dispatched to the area around 2:30 p.m. Officials have not issued any evacuation orders but are urging people to avoid the area. This will help ensure emergency vehicles and personnel can access the scene. Residents are reminded that there is a statewide burn ban currently in effect.
