Firefighters gain control of Mountain Fire as damage assessment continues in California
Firefighters are gaining control of the Mountain Fire, which is now 5% contained after burning over 32 square miles. The fire, which started near Somis, has destroyed 132 structures and damaged 88 others, primarily in Camarillo Heights. Weather conditions improved on Thursday, with winds dying down and a red flag alert lifted. Fire crews are now able to use helicopters to drop fire retardant, and they plan to work through the cooler nights to gain further control. Authorities have evacuated over 400 homes and are monitoring the area to prevent looting. Ten people suffered injuries, mostly from smoke inhalation, but none are life-threatening. Damage assessments are ongoing, with many properties still to be checked.
