Firefighters gain ground against deadly forest fire in southern Greece
Firefighters in southern Greece have made significant progress in controlling a forest fire that has been burning for four days. The blaze, which has killed two people, is now receding as crews focus on smaller fires in the area. About 570 firefighters, supported by 11 aircraft and 160 fire trucks, are working to contain the flames. The fire has affected around 6,500 hectares in the Corinthia region, prompting the evacuation of several villages. This summer has seen a record number of forest fires in Greece, with over 4,500 incidents reported. The cause of the current fire is still under investigation, but negligence is suspected.
