Firefighters gain ground on Southern California wildfire as winds ease
Firefighters in Southern California are making progress against the Mountain Fire, which has destroyed 132 structures, primarily homes. As winds began to ease, some residents returned to assess the damage. The fire has burned 32 square miles and is 7% contained. Around 10,000 people remain under evacuation orders as the fire threatens 3,500 structures. At least 88 additional buildings were damaged. Ten individuals suffered non-life-threatening injuries, and the cause of the fire is still under investigation. Governor Gavin Newsom has declared a state of emergency in Ventura County. The fire has rapidly expanded, raising concerns about air quality and prompting school closures in the area. Red flag warnings for fire danger have mostly expired, but Santa Ana winds are expected to return next week.
