Fires increase during Undas as safety concerns rise in the Philippines

As Filipinos observe Undas, a rise in fire incidents has been reported. The Bureau of Fire Protection noted a fire at Bagbag Cemetery in Quezon City on November 1, caused by an exploding electric fan. This incident highlights ongoing safety concerns during the holiday. Data shows a fluctuating trend in fire cases during Undas over the past five years, with 168 incidents reported in 2023. Open flames from candles are the leading cause, prompting the BFP to emphasize safety measures for candle use. In response to the increased fire risk, the BFP has activated OPLAN Kaluluwa, deploying around 37,000 firefighters nationwide. The campaign focuses on fire prevention and emergency readiness during the observance of All Saints’ and All Souls’ Days.
