First Coast Expressway construction progresses in Clay County
Construction on the First Coast Expressway in Clay County is ongoing, with two phases currently underway. The project aims to improve traffic flow and provide an evacuation route. The expressway will span approximately 46 miles across Duval, Clay, and St. Johns counties. The first phase was completed in 2019, while the second and third phases are expected to finish between 2025 and 2031. The new St. Johns River bridge will enhance traffic capacity and marine commerce, featuring two lanes in each direction and a higher clearance than the existing bridge. Toll collection began in July 2019, with electronic systems in place for seamless payment. Drivers can use SunPass for lower rates. More information about the project is available on the official website.
