First defenseman nominated for Travis Roy Award since 2009
Two goalies and a defenseman are among the finalists for the Travis Roy Award this year. This is a change from the usual lineup, as it is the first time since 2008 that the finalists include more defensive players. The two goalies are Brandon White from Falmouth and Drew Johnson from Thornton Academy. The defenseman is Wyatt Labonte from Biddeford/Old Orchard Beach/Massabesic. Falmouth coach Hogan Tracey had a feeling the finalists would showcase strong defensive skills. He believed that many talented goalies and defensemen were developing skills from a young age. The other finalists are forwards Marc-Andre Perron of Bangor and Sam Foley of Windham. The winner of the Travis Roy Award will be announced at a banquet on Saturday. This award honors the best senior boys hockey player in Class A. The last goalie to win was Cam Poussard from Lewiston in 2011. Notably, there have not been two goalie finalists in the same year since 2008. Johnson helped lead his team to a state championship this season. He has an impressive record with 15 wins and a goals-against average of 1.77. White also performed well with a save percentage of .923. Both coaches praised their goalies for their contributions and the stability they brought to their teams. Labonte had a productive season with one goal and nine assists. His coach praised his defensive skills and leadership qualities. If Labonte wins, he would be the fourth player from Biddeford to receive the award. Foley had an outstanding season, leading his team in scoring with 44 points. His coach highlighted his influence on and off the ice, especially in fostering a strong team culture. Perron, also a key player, scored 14 goals and contributed to his team's success. The finalists have shown skill and leadership throughout the season. Each has played a crucial role in their teams' achievements. Their hard work and commitment to the game will be recognized as the award is announced this weekend.
