Five dangerous child trends pose serious safety risks
Dr. Leana Wen, a physician and former health commissioner, has issued a warning about five dangerous trends that could lead to serious injuries or even death, particularly among children. One major concern is the use of electric scooters, hoverboards, and e-bikes. There has been a significant rise in accidents related to these vehicles. In the UK, over 29 deaths occurred between 2020 and 2023 due to e-scooter collisions. Dr. Wen emphasizes that riding these machines while under the influence of drugs or alcohol increases the risk of accidents. Texting while driving is another serious issue. Despite warnings, many people continue to use their phones behind the wheel. This behavior not only distracts drivers but also increases the chances of accidents involving other road users. Official statistics show that fines for this violation have increased in recent years. Dr. Wen also highlighted the dangers of participating in harmful social media challenges. Kids might engage in risky behaviors, like "chroming," which involves inhaling toxic substances, or the "Blackout" challenge, which encourages them to hold their breath until they faint. Tragically, some children have ended up in emergency rooms or have died from these activities. Taking unknown medications poses a significant risk as well. Dr. Wen warns that pills sourced from friends or unauthorized online sites can be counterfeit and potentially dangerous. The market for unregulated drugs continues to exist despite efforts to strengthen regulations. Lastly, she urges caution around water. Drowning is a leading cause of death for young children. Dr. Wen recommends always supervising children near water and ensuring safety measures are in place, such as gates around pools.
