Flames may pursue Calgary native college prospect Carter King
Carter King, the captain of the University of Denver Pioneers, is a standout college hockey player who may soon enter the professional ranks. The Calgary Flames are interested in signing him once his college season ends. King, 23, has had a successful season, scoring 20 goals and 38 points in 39 games. His team, the Pioneers, is on a quest to defend its national championship and is set to compete in the NCAA Tournament. King’s senior season will keep him focused on college hockey until late March or April. The Flames could have an advantage in recruiting King since he has ties to Calgary. He attended their development camp last summer, which could help them make a convincing pitch. King’s age means he can only sign a one-year entry-level deal, likely starting in the 2025-26 season. This could appeal to him, as the Flames have a current need for depth at center. Despite being smaller in size at 5-foot-11 and 190 pounds, King is known for his strong work ethic and defensive skills. He won a significant number of faceoffs this season and is a finalist for the NCHC’s Defensive Forward of the Year award. King’s past success with the Pioneers, who have won the NCAA championship twice in recent years, adds to his appeal. As the Pioneers aim for another title during the NCAA Men’s Hockey Tournament, excitement builds around King’s future. Once his college career comes to an end, he may have the chance to join the Flames and play in front of his hometown fans.
