Flathead County Shelter overwhelmed after seizing 27 dogs

The Flathead County Animal Shelter is facing a crisis after the seizure of 27 dogs from a property in Coram. The dogs were removed due to alleged animal cruelty and poor living conditions. Candy Jean Evans, 55, has been charged with felony aggravated animal cruelty and was arrested on March 13. She could face up to two years in prison and a $2,500 fine if convicted. Austin Hicks, the shelter’s division manager, reported that the dogs arrived sooner than expected, overwhelming staff. The shelter had initially thought it would have a week to prepare. Staff reached out for help and transferred 16 adoptable dogs to other shelters in Montana, but still must care for the 27 seized dogs and 10 others already in their care. The situation with Evans began in August 2024, when complaints surfaced about people shooting at the dogs. Evans and her sister initially agreed to relinquish some dogs but later refused to give more up. In March 2025, authorities responded to a complaint and found malnourished dogs in unsanitary conditions. One puppy was discovered dead in a trash container. Currently, none of the seized dogs are available for adoption as the investigation continues. The shelter is not accepting new animal surrenders but will take in animals from animal control. Hicks expressed gratitude to other shelters for their help and urged the public for support through donations to Flathead Shelter Friends.
