Floating garden aims to cleanse Maimollem lake

A floating garden has been created on Maimollem lake in Vasco to help clean the water. The garden features algae-eating plants that aim to combat the growth of water hyacinth and weeds. These plants thrive due to sewage discharge, which has also led to increased mosquito breeding in the area. Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar stated that a machine has been installed alongside the floating garden to further reduce weed levels. He emphasized that this is a temporary solution. Salkar proposed the installation of three sewage pumping stations to transport waste to higher grounds for proper treatment. In the future, Salkar hopes to restore the lake as a tourist attraction. However, he expressed concern about sand and mud filling in the catchment area near the paddy fields. Plans are underway to build a sports complex in this area, which will include various sports courts, a walking track, an amphitheater, and a children's play area. The estimated cost of the sports complex project is Rs 53 crore, and it is expected to be completed in two years.
